Travelling Rings Discussions | Santa Monica, NYC, & Worldwide

RingFlyers is a website devoted to the travelling rings and the community of swingers. The travelling rings have been an athletic pastime for well over a hundred years. The feminist and author Charlotte Perkins Gilman refers to them in the late 1800's as part of her ruminations on health and physical fitness as a strategy for emancipation. Although rare today, in one way or another the travelling rings have been a part of the athletic landscape ever since Gilman's day, maybe even before. (As far as I know noone really knows their origins. Stay tuned though — we're still looking.)

On the beach in Santa Monica California a thriving community of rings enthusiasts spend an inordinate amount of time exerting themselves in this largely unknown pasttime resembling something like gymnastics. Hundreds of people from all over the globe consider the Santa Monica beach scene a touchstone and as a result the culture of the rings have spread far and wide. Recently a rings rig was built in New York City's Riverside Park. Rigs have been built in Argentina, on a television stage, in theaters, and even in formal gymnastics facilities. There are rumors of strange ring like structures in Australia and Hungary. And there is talk of building travelling ring rigs in Miami, Chicago, Austin, and who knows where else. You may have seen them in commercials for Target. You may see them in the Jack Black & Kyle Gass film The Pick of Destiny. But for those of us who swing there is only the rush of flying through the air and the thrill of an amazing & renewing form of exercise.

These pages are largely devoted to the discussion board which ties together the ring communities of Santa Monica and New York City. It also serves to tie together our far flung bretheren throughout the world who check in periodically as they plan their next trip to the travelling rings rig closest to them. Also contained in these pages are tutorials, photos, and videos that swingers have made to spread the love of what we do. Enjoy! Drop me a note if you have any questions.
